RHRN was officially created in October 2006, after 4-5 years of functioning as an informal network managed by ARAS – Romanian Association against AIDS.
RHRN’s mission is to promote harm reduction services through increasing the communication between partner organizations, to improve harm reduction services quality at national level and to facilitate the implementation of effective policies and programs targeting drug users and other vulnerable groups.
The organisation follows several objectives: 1) to rise stakeholders awareness regarding human rights, the need to implement the international treaties, national and European legislation regarding drug users rights; 2) to initiate and to develop effective public policies targeting drug users and other marginalized groups; 3) to organize public campaigns to fight the discrimination and stigma associated with marginalized people and drug users; 4) to advocate for innovative harm reduction services and alternatives to drug use.
Areas of expertise: advocating for harm reduction services scaling-up and overall sustainability of HIV prevention services among drug users and other at-risk groups; harm reduction and drug policy training; research; communication and networking. RHRN is member of the Eurasian Harm Reduction Network (EHRN) and the International Drug Policy Consortium (IDPC) and supports the idea that drug policies should be bases on human rights and public health principles.
