Count the Costs

In 2011 the United Nations celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, the first international treaty prohibiting (some) drugs. Several NGOs, including the HCLU, launched "The War on Drugs: Count the Costs", an international campaign that calls on governments and international agencies to meaningfully evaluate the unintended consequences of the war on drugs and explore evidence-based alternatives. Transform, a UK-based drug policy think thank identified 7 major costs of the global drug war: it undermines health and security, threatens public health by spreading disease and death, undermines human rights, promotes discrimination and stigma, creates crime and enrich criminals, leads to deforestation and pollution and wastes billions of dollars on drug law enforcement. The HCLU has produced thematic movies to illustrate these costs and raise awareness on the alternatives of current drug control policies. Join the campaign at www.countthecosts.org!
