EDPI Partner from Bulgaria: Initiative for Health Foundation<\/strong><\/p>\n

The main activities<\/a> of Initiative of Health are aimed at reduction of the health and social harm, related to drug use; prevention of HIV\/AIDS among injecting drug users and among especially vulnerable groups, such as sex workers and Roma community;\u00a0training<\/span>\u00a0of professionals and volunteers in HIV\/AIDS prevention among injecting drug users;\u00a0research projects\u00a0in the field of drug use and HIV area;\u00a0advocacy efforts\u00a0for effective policies.<\/p>\n

Since\u00a01998\u00a0the organization carries out an\u00a0outreach program\u00a0for prevention of HIV and other blood transmitted infections among injecting drug users. In\u00a02003\u00a0Initiative for Health opened the first\u00a0drop-in center\u00a0for drug users in Sofia, and in\u00a02006\u00a0\u2013 a second one in the Roma community. The organization offers its clients sterile injecting equipments\u2019, counseling and testing for HIV, hepatitis B and C and syphilis, informational activities and social assistance to people living with HIV.<\/p>\n

The education\u00a0of professionals and research activities are also an important part of the IHF\u2019s activities. The foundation has completed\/participated in several research projects on the profile, behavior and needs of the target group, thanks to its unique and broad access to non-institutionalized drug users. Educational, advocacy and research activities have resulted in different publications.<\/p>\n

IHF has participated in a number of\u00a0international projects<\/a>, mostly with European focus.\u00a0It is a member of: the Eurasian Harm Reduction Network,\u00a0 the European Network for Social Inclusion and Health \u2018Correlation\u201d, the European Drug Policy Network, the International Drug Policy Consortium. The organization collaborates with a number of European partners, working in the field of HIV prevention and care, drug use, sex work, Roma communities.<\/p>\n

In the recent years the foundation is a sub-implementer of the National programs \u201cPrevention and control of HIV\/AIDS\u201d and \u201cImproving the control of TB in Bulgaria\u201d for two specific\u00a0 target groups \u2013 injecting drug users and Roma community. It is also gaining power in the field on drug policies, becoming one of the leading Bulgarian organizations engaged with fact based drug policy debate.<\/p>\n
