We interviewed Zara Snapp, an activist and co-founder of Institutio RIA, a leading drug policy reform organisation in Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Zara is a tireless activist who had a pivotal role in reforming cannabis laws in Mexico. She was one of the three plaintiffs in a case that ended up in the Supreme Court in 2018. The Court approved their motion to allow citizens to acquire seeds to cultivate cannabis for personal use. The government was supposed to design a new legally regulated supply of cannabis as an alternative to the illicit market dominated by criminal organisations. Unfortunately the government is reluctant to implement this decision and there is great resistance from various segments of Mexican society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mexico: The Long and Difficult Road to Cannabis Legalisation\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8-STVHyYY6g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But where is this resistance coming from? What can activists do to speed up the process? We met Zara at the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) in Vienna in March 2023 and asked her these questions.
