A pre-dawn house search targeting 8th-district opposition candidate Alexander Horv\u00e1th reveals how Hungary\u2019s \u201cwar on drugs\u201d has become a political weapon \u2014 deployed to intimidate dissent and control narratives ahead of elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
In the early hours of Monday morning, law-enforcement officers carried out a raid at the home of opposition candidate Horv\u00e1th Alexander, who is running in the upcoming November 9 by-election in the 8th district (Losonci negyed) of the J\u00f3zsefv\u00e1ros district. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The search began at approximately 05:55 am, according to local reports, with six to seven investigators arriving at Horv\u00e1th\u2019s residence. They proceeded to conduct a several-hour investigation, including a dog-search unit, and eventually the candidate was taken to the police station on Gyorskocsi Street for further procedures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the scene, his telephone and laptop were seized, and a urine test was administered \u2014 which Horv\u00e1th reports came back negative. A blood test was also taken and its result is still pending. According to Horv\u00e1th, the investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing. \u201cI was fully cooperative, and nothing was found,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The search follows a complaint filed on Friday by lawyer-turned-political activist T\u00e9nyi\u202fIstv\u00e1n alleging drug-possession, brought after a video circulated in government-aligned media showing Horv\u00e1th in a room with a man apparently preparing lines of a white powder. Horv\u00e1th has denied that he consumed drugs and says the footage is years old and was used to blackmail him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At a joint press conference with Horv\u00e1th and independent district mayor Pik\u00f3\u202fAndr\u00e1s, Pik\u00f3 characterised the raid as a \u201cboundary-crossing\u201d act of pressure during a campaign, claiming it amounted to political intimidation rather than a neutral law-enforcement exercise. \u201cThe use of the police for political purposes is unacceptable in a democracy,\u201d he stated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
