Join us on a visit to Bergen\u2019s HABIB, one of the pilot heroin-assisted treatment programs, to learn how heroin-assisted treatment works in practice!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back in September 2025, we joined Arild Knutsen from the Association for Humane Drug Policy to film Huset Bergen, the pioneering peer-led house. We had very little time in Bergen, but we did not want to miss the city\u2019s unique program: HABIB, the heroin-assisted treatment clinic, which had been running as a pilot program since 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HAB stands for heroin-assisted treatment in Norwegian, B is for \u2018Behandling\u2019, the Norwegian word for treatment and IB means \u2018in Bergen\u2019, but Habib (\u062d\u0628\u064a\u0628) also means \u2018my darling\u2019 in Arabic. The clinic was named by Marianne Pierron, a drug user activist who fought for and supported its operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Join us now on a guided tour with Vibeke Buljovcic, Director of Heroin-Assisted Treatment (HABIB):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group dr-wide-content\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wH9HBYtIHy4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-what-is-heroin-assisted-treatment\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is Heroin-assisted treatment?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heroin-assisted treatment (HAT) is a specialised form of opioid agonist treatment for people with severe, long-term opioid dependence who have not benefited sufficiently from conventional treatments such as methadone or buprenorphine. Patients receive pharmaceutical-grade heroin \u2014 diacetylmorphine \u2014 under medical supervision. The aim is to reduce illicit heroin use and its associated harms, while improving health, quality of life and stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The modern model of supervised heroin-assisted treatment was pioneered in Switzerland in the 1990s and was subsequently introduced in several other countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, the United Kingdom and Canada. Despite a substantial body of research supporting its effectiveness for a small group of patients with particularly severe opioid dependence, HAT remains a relatively rare treatment internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-hat-in-norway\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HAT in Norway<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norway introduced HAT as a pilot project in 2022, establishing dedicated clinics in Oslo and Bergen. When we visited HABIB in 2025, the future of the program was still uncertain: the pilot was scheduled to end in 2026, and researchers were evaluating whether the treatment should continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.regjeringen.no\/no\/dokumenter\/evaluering-av-heroinassistert-behandling-i-norge\/id3165885\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">The evaluation, published in June 2026<\/a>, found improvements in participants\u2019 health, quality of life, safety and stability, alongside a substantial decline in illicit heroin use. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.regjeringen.no\/no\/aktuelt\/proveprosjektet-med-heroinassistert-behandling-viser-tydelige-gevinster-for-pasientene\/id3165518\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Researchers recommended<\/a> that the programs in Oslo and Bergen should continue, while also highlighting the high costs and intensive resources required by the treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, in September 2026, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rusfeltet.no\/arkiv\/heroin-assistert-blir-viderefort\">the Norwegian government announced<\/a> that heroin-assisted treatment would become a <strong>permanent treatment option<\/strong>.
