Drugs Are Less of a Political Priority in Europe

Szerző: | október 14, 2016

Dear Friend of Drugreporter!

the European Monitoring Centre on Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) is a Lisbon-based institute that aims to provide reliable information on drugs. It has a central role in evidence-based decision making – even if decision makers often ignore the evidence EMCDDA provides. We interviewed EMCDDA’s new director, Alexis Goodseel, who explained what are the new trends in the drug market in Europe and how his agency is trying to adapt to the new economic and political environment. Please read and share this interivew!

When we visited Australia to attend the International AIDS Conference last year, we created a lot of footage we couldn’t edit immediately because of other work. This summer, we had some time to work on this footage, and produced three videos highlighting different aspects of harm reduction in Australia. We do not only recommend to watch these videos to those who are interested in Australian drug policy – but to everybody who would like to learn about harm reduction in general!

Global Conference on Ibogaine

Szerző: | szeptember 6, 2016

Dear Friend of Drugreporter!

Drugreporter has not only been producing hundreds of movies on harm reduction and drug policy reform since 2007 but we have trained many activists to produce and use videos for advocacy. Last year we created a new global network for videographers who make movies about drug policy. We are happy to see that more and more of our alumni are producing high quality videos. One of these videos was made by our Mexican collleagues at the Global Ibogaine Conference. It gives you an interesting overview of the therapeutical and spiritual use of this plant-based medicine – please click here to watch and share it!

We are also glad to announce that we have started a new interview-series on Drugreporter, featuring the views of activists and professionals from all over the world on burning drug policy and harm reduction issues. This month we posted an interview with Ricardo Fuertes, who speaks about his experiences as a harm reduction service provider in Barcelona and Lisbon, and another interview with Marco Perduca, an Italian politician and activist, who is discussing the prospects of marijuana law reform in Italy.

Dose of Science: The probability and predictors of substance abuse
Only a fraction of drug users will ever translate from drug use to drug dependence, yet substance abuse is a great burden, both on the individual and society. Unfortunately, our thinking about addiction is much more shaped by political ideologies than by scientific facts. Addiction is often portrayed as a molecular disease which the individual cannot control by his actions, while conservative narratives often depict it as merely the consequence of an individual’s poor decisions. Neither of these simplistic views covers the whole picture; addiction is a complex phenomenon which has biological, psychological and social components.

Stop the Killings in the Philippines!
President Duterte has given law enforcement agents licence, with impunity, to kill hundreds of drug suspects in the Philippines. This clearly breaches human rights conventions, as well as the drug control principles adopted by member states at the UNGASS on drugs in April. The international community must stand up and give teeth to its own laws and conventions!

Civil Society Must Fight Global Crackdown

Szerző: | június 10, 2016

Dear Friend of Drugreporter!

The exclusion of non-governmental representatives from the UN High-Level Meeting on AIDS is not an isolated incident, but part of a global crackdown on civil society. To fight back, we need to understand the crucial role of NGOs in policy development. Please read our opinion piece on Drugreporter: Civil Society Must Fight Global Crackdown!

The Drugreporter video advocacy team was invited to the Interdisciplinary Conference on Psychedelics Research in Amsterdam (3-5 June, 2016), where we had the opportunity to interview leading researchers who study how our brain responds to psychedelic drugs. These substances have not only huge therapeutic potential but they can transform our knowledge of our minds. Please watch our short movie produced in Amsterdam!

This month, we are going to talk about the world’s most used and abused drug, alcohol. Alcohol is so much a part of life in the Western world, that people often do not even notice that it is a drug. In this Dose of Science we are taking a look at alcohol’s effect on monkey brains.

UNGASS on Drugs: Reform Aborted

Szerző: | április 22, 2016

Dear Friend of Drugreporter!

After a long gestation, the UN drug reform experiment suffered a miscarriage. It seems the UN is not the catalyst of change but its mirror. Reformers can learn many lessons – but can also be proud of their achievements. The Drugreporter filming team produced a video report from this event, please watch and share it!

This Is How Young Artists See the War on Drugs: The Winners of Our Poster Contest

Szerző: | április 12, 2016

Dear Friend of Drugreporter!

We asked young people to create and send us posters highlighting their views about the global war on drugs. Please click here or on the poster below and have a look at the incredibly creative ways how they portray our broken drug control system!

We believe these posters send a strong message to policy makers about the need for reform on the occasion of the highest level United Nations decision making forum, the UNGASS on drugs, to be held in New York this month. We will exhibit these posters at two sites:

Museum of Drug Policy at UNGASS (245 Park Avenue (corner of Park & E 47th St., April 19-21, 2016; open 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM).

Youth Demonstration and Art Installation organised by the Students for Sensible Drug Policy in New York (Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, E 47th St, New York, NY 10017 on the 18th of April, from 3:30 to 6 PM).

Please help us and the artists to distribute these posters widely! If you would like to print and exhibit these posters, please email us at rightsreporter(at)rightsreporter.net!

Szerző: | március 31, 2016

There is a growing disagreement among governments over global drug control – this is what we learned at this year’s meeting of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna. Drugreporter’s video team was there to document the key speeches and and interview some participants about their views on the eve of the UN General Assembly Special Session on drugs.

Dose of Science: Cognitive Decline and Adolescent Marijuana Use
The ‘cognitive impairment theory’ proposes that cannabis causes cognitive decline. The hypothesis has gained some support from a 2012 study, but a recent paper with twin participants strongly argued against the theory. Both studies agree on the association between smoking and cognitive decline. Where they disagree is whether the relationship is causal or merely correlation. In this Dose of Science we take a close look at the question.

INPUD Consensus Statement Video, Poster contest and More!

Szerző: | március 4, 2016

Dear Friend of Drugreporter!

INPUD Consensus Statement – NEW VIDEO!

Watch Drugreporter’s new video, marking the launch of the Consensus Statement from the International Network of People Who Use Drugs. The Consensus Statement was launched in Kuala Lumpur in 2015, and focusses on human rights, health, and the law, in relation to people who use drugs. The Consensus Statement is informed by the perspective of those who are so catastrophically impacted by global prohibition and by the so-called ‘war on drugs’: people who use drugs themselves. The Consensus Statement stems from four regional consultations, conducted by the INPUD Secretariat in 2015 with representatives of 24 drug-user organisations from 28 countries. In the video, members of INPUD summarise the human rights of people who use drugs and INPUD’s Essential Demands.

Dose of Science: Is MDMA Neurotoxic for Human Users?
MDMA’s neurotoxicity is the topic of this and many future editions of Dose of Science. The question is not whether MDMA is neurotoxic in an absolute sense, but rather, what is the extent of the damage at various dosing regimens. Stephen Kish’s study [1] from 2010 aims to clarify the picture by employing a range of neuroimaging techniques and cognitive tests on a large sample while controlling for many potential confounding factors.
