Ethan Nadelmann's Opening Speech in New Mexico - uncut

HCLU's video advocacy team is filming in Albuquerque, New Mexico this time - we attend the International Drug Policy Reform Conference (November 12-14, 2009). The first footage we would like to share with you is Ethan Nadelmann's opening speech. Ethan is a great speaker so we didn't feel the need to edit the text, we give you the full speech here. He said "right now the wind is at our back" - which means the drug policy reform movement has an unprecedented momentum to end the drug war in the United States. We believe that if the war on drugs will end in the US the global drug prohibition regime will loose its driving force and collapse as a domino. That is why we as Europeans always have to keep an eye on what is happening in the American drug policy arena.

Ethan Nadelmanns speech
Thank you to all at this conference. Special thanks to Mr. Nadelmann, your speeches are always so moving,so true. Keep up the good work.
speaker
What a powerful speaker. Righteous role model. Let us all aspire to do as he says; support and push our leaders to do the right things.
Think and talk about sensible policy implementation, rather than settle for the status quo. Fight for change, don't just hope.
Great job, Mr. Nadelmann!
The soil to the sun
The planet is ours to share. Who is 30 old republicans? they dont know me our have never spoken to me but for some odd reason have the power to allow nicotine and tobbaco but arrest me (possibly beat) for smokeing joints. That is wrong. It shouldnt be sold or stolen, I just want to be able to grow it in my back yard.
Thanks
To who that will listen
My name is David Dean I’m a wood worker and Disabled .
But to make a long story short in 1996 I was hurt at work when a large pace of metal fell on me it toke about 31/2 years to get help and the drugs that doctor’s gave me either made me sick at my sumac or made me sleep all day so for the next 6 years I sat in my chair looking out the window watching every one getting out having fun and going to work and then a friend toed me about some people with back problems have been using Marijuana for the back pain so I did some research on it so I tried it and I was outside with my girls and was finely getting to go places with my family and I even opened up my wood shop again but its only 20 feet from the house but I can go outside now and on a good day I even help out the people live around me I’m not as fast as I was but the look on there face’s and the thanks is worth the next few days in the house.
But a lot people take it for granted that you can walk outside and fell the sun on your face or go out in the back yard and play with the grand children ?
Thank you for your time

Thank u
I have been involved in this movement for only a small time but I have to admit I am humbled by your work on this matter and the extent of this organization.
I would just like to thank those involved in this site and this movement.
This is a an extremely uplifting and motivating speech and only 2 days previous to me writing and seeing this clip I had been lost as to how to explain how fundamentally wrong prohibition and unwillingness for us to even talk of drugs, is to others with in my community.
I have been interested how governments can claim drugs are illegal because they bad yet fluoride equally as bad as drugs is added into our drinking water and we are informed that it is in our best interest.
To long we have incarcerated and victimized our fellow people all without thought because we have been told to.
Somehow drinking or taking legal drugs is in some way different to illegal drugs.
As Mr. Nadelmann clearly and crystally points out. We all agree that the current form of control and confine has and is and will continue to further corrupt our way of life.
Message heard loud and clear.
For to long we have aloud our fears, prejudices and lack of education cause so many wars and problems in our world.
We I was growing up all we would ever here from the older generation that it was our generation and then ones after that would make a change for a better world.
It's our turn to show that fact and freedom will always work better than false truths and witch hunts.
Whose to say if you are right and I am wrong.
Very motivating truth
Very motivating truth projected in this video. There's no stopping this level of passion, thank you! :-))
