"Initiative for Health", (European Drug Policy Initiative's Bulgarian partner), has published its advocacy video on the situation of drug users in Bulgarian prisons.
People practising illegal use of drugs often commit petty crime in order to obtain the money they need to get hold of the much-needed substance. In Bulgaria, imprisoned drug addicts amount to around 2000 individuals, or 20 percent of the entire number of prison inmates.
Society fosters the expectation that prisons will do the job – they will punish and correct undesirable behaviour. But dependency on drugs is a disease that cannot be treated effectively by imprisonment. Can the vicious circle – drugs and crime – be broken, if these people get a chance to receive medical treatment instead of imprisonment? These are the issues and questions which Initiative for Health raises in its new advocacy video.
