Psychedelics Come to Ukraine: Ketamine Treatment for War Veterans

Psychedelics Come to Ukraine: Ketamine Treatment for War Veterans

A short video produced by DUnews explains how ketamine can help soldiers struggling with trauma and depression.

In January 2024 The Economist published an article about how ketamine-assisted psychotherapy is used by a Ukrainian doctor, Vladislav Matrenitksy, to help veterans to overcome the trauma of war. Our friends at DUnews, a Russian language video blog, produced a short educational video to explain how ketamine is used in Ukraine – it is now available with English subtitles below, please share it on social media!

Ketamine has been authorised in Ukraine for the treatment of mental illness since 2017. Dr Matrenitsky opened the first and only ketamine clinic where he treated hundreds of soldiers suffering from depression, PTSD and anxiety. The aim, says Dr Matrenitsky, is to tap subconscious traumas: “What we are doing is turning the memories into a metaphorical journey.”
