Colorado is the second U.S. state to legalize the therapeutic use of psilocybin mushrooms. During the Psychedelic Science conference in June 2025, Drugreporter visited ETC Hospitality in Golden, Colorado — a newly licensed natural medicine healing center — to see how psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy will be practiced in real-world settings.
In Colorado, the regulated use of psilocybin falls under the state’s Natural Medicine framework, which was established following the approval of Proposition 122 in 2022. The system allows adults to access psilocybin and other natural medicines exclusively in licensed healing centers, where substances are administered in supervised, non-commercial therapeutic settings. Personal sales remain prohibited, and all facilitators must complete state-approved training and certification. The model emphasizes harm reduction, informed consent, and client safety, positioning psilocybin not as a retail product but as a regulated therapeutic service.
When we visited ETC, the center had not yet received its license, but it has since been approved.
If you’re interested in Colorado’s new model, check out our interview with Dominique Mendiola, Senior Director of Colorado’s Natural Medicine Division. She explains how the state is shaping the next chapter of psychedelic regulation in the United States.
