“We are the Keepers of the Light”

HCLU’s film on the candlelight vigil organized by the DPA in Albuquerque, New Mexico

A lot of people in progressive movements think of religion as a backward force that feeds prejudices and blocks discussions on human rights – it may be true for some fundamentalists who do not understand the common message in all the worlds’ religions about the inherited dignity of every single human beings on earth. But it is not true for Reverend Sanders, the well known preacherman of the Metropolitan Interdenominational Church. He is a man of faith who has always spoken up for those who are excluded from the mainstream society, for those whose voices are not heard because of the stigma attached to them. He is definitely not a pro-drug person – he is a Christian who wants to follow the footsteps of Jesus who has never advocated for imprisoning or punishing people who sinned, but advised people against judging and stigmatizing other people. Reverend Sanders made an inspiring speech at the Twilight Candlelight Vigil organized by the Drug Policy Alliance in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to remember the prisoners of the drug war. He pointed out that even if it seems we stand alone against the whole world in our fight for freedom and justice, that should never make us forget that only one man with a single match is enough to dispel darkness. If you fight against the sinister powers of the so-called war on drugs, you are indeed the “keeper of the light”. HCLU’s video advocacy team filmed the Vigil, watch him and other great speakers in the video we have just posted on Youtube!

And remember: don’t let anybody to put out your light 😉
