A unique protest action took place in the Bulgarian Parliament last week against a disproportional sentence – a report from Sofia
A criminal court in Bulgaria sentenced a young man to 8 months imprisonments and a fine of 10,000 BGN (approx. 5,000 euro) for the possession of 0.54 grams of cannabis costing 3,54 BGN (EUR 1,80).
The activist Radoslav Stoyanov, who participated in a parliamentary session to urge Members of Parliament to support the civil movement against ACTA, brought out a joint from his pocket and waved it in front of the deputies and ministers. Stoyanov asked the deputies to advocate for the young man and to oppose the unjust sentence.
It is not the first time a Bulgarian court sentences a marijuana user to jail, however in this case it is especially shocking that this sentence was passed by the newly established specialized court, intended to deal with heavy and serious trials, related to organized crime.
